Get Over the Hump, Session 3

It all starts with scales.

In session 3 of Get Over the Hump we get into SCALES, starting with the C major scale. Chords are built from scales and we’ll be getting into that in sessions 4 and 5.

To my Horn arranging friends. I understand that this is very basic stuff, but my goal is to help novice musicians get a better, faster start. So if you know anyone, pass it along. The book is a condensed version of what someone would actually need to learn to Get Over The Hump. There's also information in the for book everyone... I hope :)

Jazz & R&R Horns session 9

In session 9 we get into open voicing for 5 part voicing and review Drop 2 and Drop 2-4."

I want to thank my new friend Percy Stanbury from Peru who is a fabulous bassist with some very cool YouTube videos of him playing jazz fusion.  Percy has been emailing me some examples of a "Skip" voicing concept.  The opposite of "Drop."  Apparently the group, Tower of Power likes to use this concept.  We'll have to get into this idea at some point. Very cool stuff.

This week I Skyped a call to China with a potential client regarding some arranging work for a girl singer in Beijing. What a trip, talking to the other side of the planet. Was very exciting for me.

I'm anxious to get through the voicing part of this tutorial so we can move onto writing parts for your players and also start getting into some writing concepts.  Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Would love to hear from you.
